About The Diversity? An Educational Advantage Research Project
The content of this website is primarily drawn from research data collected for a project entitled: “Investigating the Pedagogic and Cultural Dimensions of Multicultural Education”. This data includes: Commonwealth and State policy documents; insight into the experiences of Years 9 and 10 Arabic-speaking background students from two Victorian secondary schools; and examples of pedagogy, resources and other skills utilised by teachers working in culturally diverse classroom settings.
The Diversity—An Educational Advantage project studies the challenges faced by students in culturally diverse secondary schools, focussing on the experiences of Year 9 and 10 students from Arabic-speaking backgrounds. Schools in the northern metropolitan region of Melbourne, with high populations of families from Arabic-speaking and other backgrounds, many of whom are newly arrived in Australia, are project partners, as well as Victorian Arabic Social Services (VASS). The study assesses whether individual students’ motivations, parents’ attitudes and the schools’ structures and pedagogies impact upon students’ educational achievements and sense of social belonging.
