Steps to take

Step 1: Explore some of the experiences of students and teachers for this theme of identity and belonging. Extracts from their responses are available for you to explore under four overlapping topics:

Topic 1: Who am I? Who are you?
Topic 2: Creating connections, belonging, pride…
Topic 3: Everyone has a story. What’s yours?
Topic 4: Increasing knowledge of self and others

Step 2: Examine some of the resources available for these topics and consider how they may or may not be useful for your classroom and professional development.

Step 3: Consider how the issues raised in this theme may be linked to current curriculum frameworks. In particular, reflect on the way that you currently explore values related to identity and cultural diversity in your own classroom. If you are not already aware of these key values, take a moment or two to read them. A copy of the Values Framework is available by clicking here. Many teachers in our study suggested that they implicitly engage with these values, while others explicitly encourage students to explore them in both curricular and extra-curricular settings. To what extent do you explore these values in your own classroom?
