Student Snapshot 1
FEMALE STUDENT: We were together, my family and his family [pointing to a boy sitting behind her]. ‘Cause my dad stole this big truck, a big fire truck – my dad tells me everything – just to get out of Iraq. So we drove halfway to Turkey… And he took everything out, like, all those hoses, everything in the fire thing. And he put everyone in, 40 people, 50 people. And then, like we went halfway to Turkey and then we had to walk for three days in the ice. Some people even lost their babies and some people lost their toes and stuff… And then we came by plane. That’s how I was born in Turkey, ‘cause my oldest brother was born in Iraq, and my sister, and my other two brothers. And then on our way to come to Australia I was born in Turkey and then we came to Australia and my little brother was born. And he was with us. My dad kind of likes to save people’s lives.
INTERVIEWER: Now, you’ve just told us a great story about your background. Do you think it would help if people understood more about each other’s experiences like that?
FEMALE STUDENT: No, no-one asks. So I don’t tell anyone.
