Teacher Snapshot 1
TEACHER: Often kids migrating want to align themselves with the country they’ve moved into. They don’t want to be Syrian, or Greek, or whatever, although their parents want them to be that. There was a kid at Brunswick, I can’t remember if he was Arabic or Vietnamese, who wanted a good Australian name like Mario because all the kids at the language centre were called Mario because there was a strong Italian presence there at the time. He wanted to be like all the other kids.
