Steps to take
Step 1: Explore some of the experiences of students and teachers for this theme of Expectations of Self, Family & Teachers. Extracts from their responses are available for you to peruse, in three overlapping topics:
Topic 1: Differences between education in Australia and abroad
Topic 2: Engaging students means also engaging parents
Topic 3: Alternative pathways, alternative success stories
Step 2: Examine some of the resources available for these topics and consider how they ma,y or may not, be useful for your classroom and professional development.
Step 3: Consider how the issues raised in this theme can be linked to current curriculum frameworks. In particular, consider the way that you currently explore values of identity and cultural diversity in your own classroom. If you are not already aware of these key values, take a moment or two to read them. A copy of the Values Framework is available here. Many teachers in our own research suggested that they implicitly engage with these values, while others explicitly encourage students to explore them in both curricula and extra-curricula settings. To what extent do you explore these values in your own classroom?
Step 4: Explore some of the resources available that may be useful in your own classroom practice. These resources have been grouped under headings used in the VELs framework.
