Parent Snapshot 1

ARABIC-SPEAKING BACKGROUND (ASB) PARENT: One time I watched 60 Minutes. I don’t know, one Lebanese boy, he was born here in Australia, he’s Australian, you know? Well he’s done a crime… There’s no nationality for a crime, no colour for a crime. He got caught, he will be judged. Whatever, he will go to prison… in the media, they say he has to leave this country.

ASB PARENT: He was born here, the man who did the crime.

ASB PARENT: The Lebanese done a crime, where you going to send him?

ASB PARENT: He born here, he don’t understand about the other country.

ASB PARENT: Sometimes, it happened for the young, especially for the children. They think they are being targeted…

ASB PARENT: …our boys, our children, they are worried about that.

ASB PARENT: They think they will get hurt.

ASB PARENT: You make them feel they are not Australian. You know, like it’s not their country…

ASB PARENT: They feel like they have to prove they are Australian….

ASB PARENT: It’s like we’re guilty, we have to prove that we are innocent here. Always you are guilty. But for others, you are innocent before you are proved guilty…
