Steps to take
Step 1: Explore some of the experiences of students and teachers for this theme of Stereotypes & Cultural Perceptions. Extracts from their responses are available in three overlapping topics:
Topic 1: Racial stereotypes and the media
Topic 2: Perceptions of Australians and “the Other”
Topic 3: Other perspectives of “the Other”
Step 2: Examine some of the resources available for these topics and consider how they may or may not be useful in your classroom, and professional development.
Step 3: Consider how the issues raised in this theme can be linked to current curriculum frameworks. In particular, consider the way that you currently explore values of identity and cultural diversity in your own classroom. If you are not already aware of these key values, take a moment or two to read them. A copy of the Values Framework is available here. Many teachers in our own research suggested that they implicitly engage with these values, while others explicitly encourage students to explore them in both curricular and extra-curricular settings. To what extent do you explore these values within your own classroom?
Step 4: Explore some of the resources available that may be useful in your own classroom practice. These resources have been grouped under headings used within the VELs framework.
