TEACHER: I remember being really shocked some years ago when one of our “Aussie” kids was leaving and it came out - I knew her really well but it took a long time for her to say to me - that she felt like she was being victimised because she was “Aussie” and they called her “the blonde thing” and gave her quite a hard time a lot of the time and she hadn’t told anyone else…

TEACHER: Sometimes I feel people exclude Anglo culture from those terms [multiculturalism and cultural diversity] and I have an issue with that because it is a culture whether it’s the dominant culture or one of the other cultures. Maybe you can counteract that “them” and “us” mentality. If it’s legitimate to find out about the cultures of your students in your classroom I also think that discussion about different types of Anglo culture. There are stereotypes just as there are stereotypes for Arab-Australians or Muslim-Australians. I think that needs to be addressed as well.
