Steps to take

Step 1: Explore some of the experiences of students and teachers for this Theme of identity and belonging. This theme includes the following Topics:

Topic 1: Learning about life: sex and drugs

Topic 2: Learning about religion

Topic 3: Learning how to learn

Topic 4: Learning about other cultures and values


Step 2: Examine some of the resources available for these Topics and consider how they may or may not be useful for your classroom and professional development.


Step 3: Consider how the issues raised in this theme can be linked to current curriculum frameworks. In particular, consider the way that you currently explore issues of identity and cultural diversity in your own classroom. If you are not already aware of these key values, take a moment or two to read them. A copy of the Values Framework is available here. Many teachers in our own research suggested that they implicitly engage these with values, while others explicitly encourage students to explore them in both curricular and extra-curricular settings. To what extent do you explore these values in your own classroom?


Step 4: Explore some of the resources available that may be useful in your own classroom practice. These resources have been grouped under headings used in the VELs framework.
